PRESENTATION
Following the verticalization proposal encouraged by PROPP-UFOP through the creation of emerging groups, the Postgraduate Program in Applied Economics of UFOP (PPEA-UFOP) began to be planned from May 2013. Since then, several goals and actions were established in order to implement the proposal submitted and approved in the Internal Instances of this University in June 2015. In December of the same year, the proposal was recommended by the Higher Level Personnel Improvement Commission (CAPES), an organ of the Ministry of Education responsible for the recognition and evaluation of postgraduate curses stricto-sensu (professional masters, academic masters, and doctorates) at a national level. In its first year, the PPEA-UFOP was accredited to the Nacional Association of Postgraduate Centers in Economics (ANPEC).
The definition of the line of research "Applied Economics" is supported by the profile of the permanent faculty of the PPEA-UFOP, and also the possibilities of multidisciplinary integration with other courses of the UFOP. As well as the experience and recognition of the Professors of the Graduate Course in Economics of the Center for Development and Regional Planning of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (CEDEPLAR / UFMG), which established an unrestricted and temporary academic collaboration.
The objective of the PPEA-UFOP is to deepen the training of qualified human resources and capable to carry out activities related to the economic question and its applications, which assists in the decision making in the public and private spheres. In addition, the Program seeks to stimulate the consolidation of research groups in UFOP, especially those that attend to the socioeconomic, demographic and cultural specificities of the Inconfidentes region, where UFOP campuses are located.
In addition to the solid training in Economic Theory and Quantitative Methods, the student of the PPEA-UFOP will have the possibility to deepen his knowledge in the areas of Economic Development and Evaluation of Public Policies. For this purpose, the curricular matrix of the Master's Degree in Applied Economics contains elective subjects of interest for these areas, such as Tourism Economics, Mineral Resources Economics, Analysis of Mining Situation, Economy of Education, among others.
LINES OF INVESTIGATION:
EVALUATION OF PUBLIC POLICIES AND QUANTITATIVE METHODS APPLIED TO THE ECONOMY
This line of research in quantitative methods associated with the evaluation of public policies, is intended to carry out theoretical and empirical studies, with emphasis on the application and development of methods that serve the field of public policies, but also the other lines of the Program. The tools of quantitative methods are an important instrument for economists to test hypotheses and predictions of theoretical models. The asignature of Statistics and Econometrics are part of this area. These subjects develop their own methods for treating and theses in the area of economics. In particular, these disciplines include the development of the subareas of Longitudinal Data Analysis, Panel Data Analysis, Time Series, Hypothesis Testing and simulations. Furthermore, students can develop programming and information technology skills necessary for economists with postgraduate training. This line of research offers a wide range of topics for investigation based on impact analyzes at different scales, levels of analysis disaggregation; Sectoral (health, education, infrastructure, urban planning and management), important for the training of human resources for public and private institutions. The scope of investigative studies in this area allows us to study and formulate alternatives on the role of the State and public policies in promoting development (national, regional, local), even allowing reflections and propositions to be made for our region, there is still a lack of studies on these topics.

ECONOMIC THEORY
Studies in this area allow us to address theoretical and normative elements associated with development at both the macroeconomic and microeconomic levels. In this sense, starting from the micro and macroeconomic foundations, economic theory supports the basis of Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses in Economics. Covers General Equilibrium Theories, incomplete markets and market imperfections, Industrial Organization, Game Theory. It supports research possibilities that can unfold from the interface with both areas (Micro and Macroeconomics), for example, in studies on International Trade Theory, International Finance, International Economic Relations, among other interactions.
